This sub category of heavy metal is known as Nu Metal. Nu Metal will blend style and elements from Grunge, Punk and Hip Hop into their music. Band in nu metal mostly used aggressive vocals and melodic singing in their metal music.
This term "nu metal" meaning "new metal" was introduced in a Spin magazine article. As time went on and the genre expanded the "new metal" term was changed to "nu metal." It was presented at the end of the movie "Get Thrashed." Nu metal started up in the early 1990's and was at the highest point in the early years of 2000.
Nu Metal's popularity began to rise in 1998 when Korn's third album "Follow the Leader" sold for 9 million copies worldwide. After the doors were opened for the nu metal community, nu metal bands came out to the public.
The nu metal bands popularity grew and so did the community. Staind, Coal Chamber and Limp Bizkit started to have success in the nu metal community after the release of Korn's "Follow the Leader" album. The start of nu metal bands came from the Los Angeles scene, like Static-X, Spineshank and Coal Chamber. Nu Metal bands such as LimpBizkit, Slipknot, Disturbed, Sevendsut, Godsmack and Soufly began to become very popularity and successful. All of these bands have had the opportunity to play in huge metal tours like Family Values Tour, Lollapalooza, Ozzfest. The 30th anniversary of Woodstock featured mostly nu metal bands and was the biggest tour for the nu metal community.
As the nu metal genre grew so did the number of bands. Linkin Park, Papa Roach, P.O.D. and System of a Down all became big hits, pushing most of their albums to platinum. The nu metal community was at its high in 2001 when nu metal was the most popular metal music in American. At this time records labels were signing mostly new nu metal bands. With the genre being overloaded with new bands, this resulted in bad quality of music.
In the begining of the year 2000, nu metal's poplularity started to decline and bands that started the revolution started to see a drop in sales to their new released albums. With nu metal slowing down, the metal community moved on to the next generation of metal music which is a pop / emo punk. Some nu metal bands have changed their style to try to target some of this market. But most have stayed playing the nu metal.
