In 1988 in Sweden a band called Scum was formed through two guitarists, a drummer, and vocalist.
After local space music via the title of Johan Hegg changed Mäkitalo on vocals, the band you could understand as Amon Amarth started to form.
In 1991, after liberating only one demo, Scum changed their title to Amon Amarth, so named after the Sindarin phrase for Mt. Doom from Tolkien's Center-Earth. Later, in 1993, Amon Amarth recorded their first demo, Thor Arise. With the identity amendment, the band started to change their sound to a more death metal method along with Viking-impressed lyrics. The band consisted of Olavi Mikkonen on guitars, Nico Kaukinen on drums, Anders Hansson also on guitars and Ted Lundström on bass. After one other demo (The Arrival of the Fimbul Iciness) and an EP (Sorrow Throughout the 9 Worlds 1996), the band singed to the record label that may be home from this level on, Metal Blade, and launched their debut full length, As quickly as Sent from the Golden Hall.
